The workshop is about the influences of Latin music in jazz and vice versa, the history, origin and roots of Latin music and how it developed until it merged with jazz music in the last century.

Alberto Marsico HAMMOND ORGAN: THE SOUND MACHINE

The STORY:
A brief overview of the instrument and its most important players, from 1935 to 2019
The BLUES:
Improvise on the twelve-bar blues and the most used scales.
The SOUNDS :
The most used drawbar presets in jazz, blues, rock, soul and funk.
The GROOVE :
How to groove hard with simple bass lines and chord comping.

From Jazz to Hip-Hop

Music Meeting: “From jazz to hip hop” will have guest speakers such as DJ Maestro, Kirk Lightsey, Joe Flizzow, Arabyrd & Marques Young sharing their musical viewpoints on the development, fusion and co-relation between jazz and hip hop. Introduction of the common roots of jazz and hip hop and the many fusions of jazz & hip hop that has been done over the last 30 years. Exploring why musicians find it interesting to fuse hip hop elements in jazz and vice versa. What is the difference for hip hop artists to perform and interact with a live band on stage compared to a computer. How jazz and hip hop can contribute, and have done so to social awareness and political change.

DJ Maestro​

Nowadays famous dj’s are superstars. Perform for 10 thousands of people. But it’s not just the dj skills that counts. DJ’s have to make their own productions and remixes to gain an audience. But at the same time being a great producer just is not enough. It’s the combination of releasing tracks and the skills to entertain a crowd.

Lewis Pragasam CREATIVE CONCEPTS FOR
THE MODERN DRUMMER

The drum workshop will address and discuss new and creative perspectives on technique, stylising, individuality/originality, Youtube – positives and negatives, soundscaping and new directions in rhythm and groove performances based on the contents of the books: An Introduction to Drum Grooves * Ethnic Malaysian Drum Grooves * Groove Control * Art of Drumming – My Style.

NJWA Your Voice As A Storytelling Tool

  • Enhance your performance by learning different techniques to convey the message of your song
  • Lyrical and song analysis
  • Basic vocal techniques (breathing and vocal placements)
  • Participants are encouraged to bring a song they’d like to work on (lyrics and sheet music - an accompanist will be there)

Chanda Rule Embodied Singing

A hands on and participatory workshop that walks through breath, body and the vocal instrument with physical and mindfulness exercises and also works through songs, helping participants connect more fully to the text and their own experience of singing.
